What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does Discovery Mean?
Mr. May has asked us to write what “discovery” means; here is what it means to me. The word “discovery” has the word discover in it. Discover means to find or find out. On the front of my binder I am discovering gold. I said in the picture “I found gold!” That is what discovery means to me.

How can we, as Caine has inspired, demonstrate through teamwork our imagination, determination, and passion for creativity and innovation, with our own arcade constructions?

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game? The game I did my research to find out what makes an effective professional arcade game was JUMP. The name of the company who created this game was Camadro, Inc. The object of the game is to get the green man to the next level and dodge monsters. How you play the game is you use the arrow keys to direct the man left, right, duck, and jump. Other directions are the space bar lets you shoot the monsters and there are elevators that take you to other levels of the game. The rules are displayed at the bottom of the screen. If I could give this a star rating I would give it a 3 out of 4 because it is pretty hard and well thought out. You win the game by beating all of the levels.
If I had to choose materials to build this game I would choose cardboard for the base, scissors to cut things, paper for a sign or other things, tape to put the materials together, markers and crayons to color, colored pencils to color also, and Legos to make a base. I think it would cost about $30 maximum- probably about $10 to buy materials and about $15-$20 to publish the game. If you want this game you can go to:

It is really fun; you should try it!
Design Brief
What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
In the Discovery Center we are making an arcade game called LAX Ball; I think it is very fun! How you play the game is you have to throw the ball to get it in one of the slots, and it is a little tricky. When we present our game we will tell you how to play at the beginning so you will understand a little bit more, and you will not forget, and the directions are going to be displayed on the game. If I had to rate this game on difficultly out of 4 stars I would give it 4 out of 4 stars because it is pretty hard. It is hard because it takes luck to get the ball in one of the slots. You win the game if you get the ball in the slots, and we have big prizes and small prizes. We also have a jackpot, the jackpot is the smallest slot, and it is very hard to get. That is why it is called the jackpot. When you win the game you win a prize; how many you get depends on how many shots you make.

Our design shows a table with holes in it, and each hole has a different value. You use tennis balls to shoot into the holes. We have a sign at the top of our game telling you the names and the value of each hole. We will give you tickets to get prizes. Our game is in the shape of a square, and it has four legs. We are going to design the legs as lacrosse sticks, and we will decorate the game so it will look like a professional game.

We will need cardboard for a base, balloons for decoration, prizes for if you make any shots, popsicles sticks for support for the legs, tape to put things together, markers to decorate, and duct tape for decoration. It will take about 7 days to build our game, as partners. For our base to be more stable, we need to be consistent. We need to decorate our game so it looks presentable, and for people to play it and have fun!

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?

Examiner: Ceci Higinbothom

Date: 2/4/13

Praise: Very Creative, challenging, and colorful.

Question: How do the points relate to the prizes?

Polish: I loved the game!

Student Comment: Thanks mom, we tried to make our game, Lax Ball, challenging and fun at the same time. We made the game colorful because a well decorated game stands out and people will want to play it. We got the points a little mixed up, because we made the points before we made the prizes, and we got the numbers wrong. We will fix it and make the points relate to the prizes. We put a lot of work into the game, and we very much like that you enjoyed it!

Examiner: Christine Andrews

Date: 1/30/13

Praise: Well thought out! I think the thought you put into the different levels was spot on! Making the harder spots worth more was a good idea. The design was sturdy and the game was decorative. It was not too hard and it was not too easy.

Question: What is your favorite aspect of the game? Why do you think people will want to come and play your game more than once?

Polish: You could mark where people want to stand on the ground.

Student Comment: Thank you, we put a lot of work into our game, Lax Ball. We tried to make the game hard but not so hard that you cannot win! And we like to be decorative about our game! Our favorite aspect of the game is the level of difficulty. I think that people will come and play our game again because of the looks and how much fun they had! Putting a mark where people should stand on the ground is a very good idea; I think that would help the players.

Examiner: Mr. Holgate

Date: 1/30/13

Praise: It looks wonderful; the design fits with the game. The game is very solid; I think that it would last through many players before it showed signs of wear. I enjoyed the game.

Question: Do you think its skill or luck? Are you giving away prizes too easily?

Polish: Fix the sign on the back so everything will match up.

Student Comment: Thank you, we tried our best to make the design of our game, Lax Ball, appealing. We tried to make our game sturdy and strong so it could survive more than one play. I am glad you enjoyed it! In reference to your comment I think playing our game is a little bit of both, skill and luck. We changed the prizes so we would not give away too many, because we were running out. We are going to make the points relate to the prizes more and not give away as many..

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?
Reflection on Project
What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

I wish that we could have made Lax Ball an actual table not a box underneath, and I was not planning to have a ramp. I wish we had more prizes too.

Specifically, how would we do this?

We could have done this by putting less duct tape on the top of the game, and made the legs stronger and more durable. We could have bought more prizes and asked how many people we were going to play our game.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

I learned that making an arcade game is easier than you think.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

I know now that making an arcade game is easy; I thought it was going to be impossible but it was not.

What can you do know that you couldn’t before doing this project?

Make an arcade game, work with a friend for a long time, and to make a stable game.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

I liked learning how to cooperate with a friend on a big project, keeping up with a project, and learning how to have fun in class.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

Having some sort of challenge, or having a time constraint to push us more.

What was the process of making the game?

We started out with a cardboard box, and Mr. May gave us an assignment to make a Crusie Arcade Game! We brought in embellishments to make our game more presentable and strong. We used a lot of tape and cardboard. Our game was practically made out of duct tape. Overall it was fun, and I had a very fun and nice partner; her name was Kiley.
